What is the Preferred Design Path?

APR Design Recognition through the Preferred Design Path provides third-party recognition for manufacturers of materials, components and/or complete packages whose products have been designed to achieve a Preferred status as outlined within in the APR Design® Guide for Plastics Recyclability.

NOTE: This path was formerly known as Meets Preferred Guidance (MPG).

What are the requirements to apply for recognition through the Preferred Design Path?

Eligible products must be categorized as Preferred within the APR Design® Guide for Plastics Recyclability, within categories that have been approved by the APR committee, and completion of any required internal or third-party testing.

What is the application process?

Recognition through the Preferred Design path generally takes 2-6 weeks to complete, and consists of:

  1. an evaluation by the APR Design® Guide administrator and technical staff
  2. measuring the candidate item against each APR Design® Guide criterion for a Preferred design
