Canada's leading Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs)—Circular Materials, Éco Entreprises Québec, and Recycle BC—have launched a nationwide Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI) process to identify sortation and recycling service providers to meet requirements under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs that are being implemented for almost 40 million residents (equivalent to the size of California). Canada and the US are large trading partners of post-consumer plastics destined for recycling and under EPR quantities of plastic packaging requiring sorting and recycling are expected to grow significantly.
Sorting and recycling solutions must be found for all types of rigid and flexible plastic packages. In Canadian jurisdictions, all plastic packages are regulated without exception and must achieve increasingly stringent plastics recycling targets. The REOI process is the first step in the commercial procurement of plastic sorting and recycling services nationally. The result will be longer-term commercial arrangements between the PROs and their service providers that will provide economic stability to service providers as the basis for ongoing innovation.
